{"id":81,"date":"2011-01-21T16:11:24","date_gmt":"2011-01-21T16:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allergy-associates.com\/?p=81"},"modified":"2011-01-21T16:11:24","modified_gmt":"2011-01-21T16:11:24","slug":"allergy-vs-lactose-intolerance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allergy-associates.com\/?p=81","title":{"rendered":"Allergy vs. lactose intolerance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Dear Dr. K:\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty sure I&#8217;m allergic to milk because it always gives me gas and diarrhea, but my allergy test to milk was negative.\u00a0 What gives?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In all likelihood you have lactose intolerance due to lactase deficiency.\u00a0 Lactose is the carbohydrate milk sugar which is a disaccharide &#8220;two-sugar&#8221;.\u00a0 It consists of the monosaccharide glucose bound to the mono-saccharide galactose.\u00a0 Unlike the bovine intestinal track which can absorb disaccharides, the human intestines can only absorb monosaccharides.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lactase is the enzyme found on the brush border in the intestines where the two sugars split, and lactose intolerance occurs when there is a complete or partial absence of the lactase enzyme.<\/p>\n<p>Later symptoms will occur when the amount of lactose ingested exceeds the amount of enzyme present.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When sugars are not broken down and absorbed in the intestine they hit the bacteria-filled colon where they are fermented.\u00a0 This process of fermentation leads to gas and intestinal irritability.<\/p>\n<p>In most people lactase deficiency is partial and therefore they can tolerate modest amounts of lactose.\u00a0 Also, lactase enzyme is available as an over-the-counter, self-help remedy to be taken with any cow milk product.\u00a0 To be successful, the dose of &#8220;lactaid&#8221; has to be titrated to the lactose load present in the meal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Dr. K:\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty sure I&#8217;m allergic to milk because it always gives me gas and diarrhea, but my allergy test to milk was negative.\u00a0 What gives?
